the song goes "where have you gone joe di maggio, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you"

its basically saying joe dimaggio was the poster child for everything that was clean and right in the world.....then he wasnt in the spotlight anymore and times started changing....so in a wasy they were reminiscing about the way things used tro be and how it was missed

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you (Woo, woo, woo)
What's that you say, Mrs. Robinson
Joltin' Joe has left and gone away
(Hey, hey, hey...hey, hey, hey)

Speaks to looking back at a lost youth and bygone innocence. Which was lost due to the corrupting influence of Mrs. Robinson whose disillusionment with the world and longing for the way things should be made her a bitter person who seduced Benjamin ,which was quite easy, after all he just got out of college and had no sense of what to do now, easy prey.

She gave up on her marriage and sense of normallacy and when Benjamin fell in love with her daughter she did everything she could to ruin it believing Benjamin was wrong in sleeping with a married woman when it was she who seduced him in the first place. She didn't want anyone else having the happiness she gave up on.

Mrs. Robinson was quite mad i tell you. The cheese fell off her cracker a long time ago.

It's the need for a hero. "Where have you gone, Joe . . ." is referencing how the US was in a more uncertain time, with fewer specific heroes that kids could look to.

In the movie, Mrs Robinson seduced a younger guy, and the song is talking about what made him susceptible to temptation.

I think that this is a reference to how things are fleeting in life, here today, gone tomorrow. Joe DiMaggio was the NY Yankee centerfielder during the 40's and 50's.

It was expressing a wish for the heroes of the past. Joe DiMaggio was one of those cleancut upstanding guys, kind of the Cal Ripken of his day. BTW he was a baseball player, not football.

he was married to marilyn monroe and it was supposed to have been a perfect marriage

they finally did divorce, but he still made it known that he loved her, when she died, he had roses put on her grave for eternity. it was the love story.

he was also a famous baseball player.

anyway, turning a lonely eye to him meant that they felt his pain
