Spam is mass-sent unsolicited emails. Usually to try to sell something. The name "spam" comes from the real meat brand "Spam" (http://www.spam.com/), due to their aggressive marketing and a Monty Python sketch.
Use email filters, some can be provider by your ISP, or with your mail reader.

The best way to avoid it is to be selective with where you submit your email address. Every time you enter your address on a website or get on a mailing list of any kind, the greater the risk. Always send spam to your spam-catcher which most mailboxes have, preferably without opening.

spam is an email with a virus that could infect your computer.
there is no set way to prevent spam [software might work, though] but just to be safe don't open any attatchments from people you don't know.
