Good luck. As the wife of a store manager I can tell you, NO ONE wants to work for the money anymore! Or almost no one. It's really odd, the ones that do take the jobs, don't seem to think they should have to show up to get paid, either! My husband ran a convenience store a while, and it was worse that a regular-type store - they paid at least a buck an hour more than other stores of that type in the area, and still couldn't get anyone to apply for a long time, and those they had, just didn't think it was 'worth it' to come in every day! Those they did get, and get hired, they had to watch carefully, as about half of them were there to take beer or cigarettes as long as they could get away with it, and then quit and/or disappear. This was not a racial issue, either, as they had a mix of employees and the problem was inclusive of all the groups! It was largely an age thing, the younger the employee, the less likely to be prompt, clean and honest. Sad. I know there are good kids out there, but they aren't working in those kinds of jobs, usually. To answer your what should I do try the local employment office, they can point you to a group that really wants a job. The one in my town has a thing called 'job club' that meets twice a week, just to network towards finding work, and they cross all the ranges of employment, factory, store help, office help, executives, everything.

There are a few choices that you can do. You can place an ad in the want ads of your local newspaper, perhaps put an ad in your store window, or perhaps contact a personnel job placement agency, and have them do the pre-screening for you, where an appointment would be set up and to then interview the applicant.

Pay more or offer some other additional incentive. If you can't afford it, you can't afford to hire them in the market you are in so do without.
