I want all black people to see that hey A Straight Black man Can do this and a Black man can accomplish that. Doesn't that take away from the achievement. It almost looks like I'm more concerned with being black than what I've applied my self to achieve.

Here is my question, So a Gay person is succesful. Why bring it up like I have done this and that in life but I'm Gay. I don't get it. like don't single out a person becasue they are gay, Yet Gay people can (some) do it to themselves. Whats the point?

It's great that your are successful, it has nothing to do with you being gay like my success has nothing to do with me being Black. To mention that seems to take a bit of steam out of one's success, it's the dream seem empty.

If my only goal was to prove that I could get a good job graduate college and have money as a Black man, What happens when I get there. It's not hard to, what is hard to do is achieve for one's self thats the idea we should push, right?

What say you?

Indy T I still think your on the wrong track. I wouldn't teach a kid that they can be Black and Successful, Just show them they can be successful everything else isn't important and can set up a child to have empty dreams.

I don't think many answered you question because they were stuck on the 1st paragraph.
We should all be proud of what we do and we should encourage children to be successful no matter what obstacles they face. we need to let them know that wether they are black, white, blue gay, straight etc...that they can achieve things in life. So in some cases it would be very inspiring to others and is a good thing but I don't think it should be mentioned everytime someone accomplishes something.

In the end even though it is an accomplishment to rise above what people stereo type you and your capability as there is no need to boast using minute things like race, sexual orientation, or financial situation.
You should be proud that you took the hard road and climbed the later but it is rather shallow if you fall back on these things for gloating every time you succeed.

For example:
"I have graduated college and got a $200,000 a year job and I am black/and or gay" is making your achievement seem empty but...

"I had graduated from college and got a $200,000 a year job after over coming man obstacles in my life" is a little more appropriate.

I'm not exactly sure what your question is asking, although I kind of know where you're getting at.

It's true that a lot of the accomplishments of gay or black people, as per your examples, have nothing to do with the fact that they're gay or black, but they get more popularity just for being gay or black. The thing is that there are all different situations where the "gay card" or "race card" is used to play up the accomplishment. Sometimes the person who accomplished the feat doesn't use the gay or race card, but if not, then their respective communities will jump at the advantage; say someone becomes a famous singer who supports charitable causes and only after he becomes famous does he tell everyone he's gay. The gay community activists can jump at the chance to promote him as an outstanding gay citizen, and therefore try to promote the image of the entire gay community. Do you see what I mean?

Other times, it's the person who accomplished the feat that takes advantage of his or her own disposition. Say you had another famous gay singer who wasn't quite cutting it with the music alone, so he tells everyone that he's gay and had to struggle through life fighting the scorn of society. That makes him a stronger person in everyone's eyes, and suddenly he's a little more famous. (And then the gay activists have a chance to once again jump in and promote the difficulties of life.)

It just so happens that if someone accomplishes something and had to face additional struggles, such as prejudice and racism, it sort of heightens the accomplishment. Take as an independent example: someone works three jobs all the way through college, gets two hours of sleep a night, works for twenty years to pay off his loans after he graduates, while supporting a family. Another person has lived in Bel-Air all his life, had his parents pay for everything, had smooth free rides all the way to college (literally and figuratively, let's say he drives a BMW bought with his parents' money), got a major inheritance after someone died and hardly had to lift a finger to get funding. If the guy who struggled all his life discovered the cure for AIDS, wouldn't it be more notable when you realize that he went through so much and still managed to accomplish something great?

I should add that that's my explanation as to why the fact that someone's race or sexual orientation makes a difference in people's opinions. People face varying degrees of prejudice everywhere, and so yes, it of course only counts on what's inside, but you can't get everyone to see it that way.

Whatever your accomplishments, there are others that you CAN inspire because of "what" you are, those are the ones that it is important for you to be known. There are many disadvantaged youth with no one that they Identify with, no direction, and honestly little hope. Who knows exactly who will take notice of your accomplishments, but it is proven that people in general do identify with their own personal situation/ethnic group/ sexual orientation.
If your story as a black man could get the notice of a disadvantaged black youth, would you deny talking about your heritage simply because you felt it was unimportant?
Children need someone and something they can "connect" with, even if the connection is nothing more than race, background, or even sexual orientation.
In the grand scheme of things, does it matter more that you were successful, or that your life inspired someone else to greater things? I don't see someone "bragging" about being, black, latino, gay, whatever to get accolades from their peers, I see them attempting to inspire someone else who might not otherwise take notice.

Society discriminates, its a fact. And young adults need role models, its also a fact. Dealing with homosexuality as a young adult can be fraustrating, so having a role model to look up to is not always a bad thing. And if being a role model helps just one person then it was worth saying.... "I'm gay and I am successful" ... its never about giving yourself a pat on the back, its about giving others around you a goal to achieve knowing that someone just like them has done it.

Preach brother, preach!

I am one who shares Dr. Kings dream that all men be judged by the depth of their character and not by the color of their skin. This is one reason why I strongly support Dr. Rice as a candidate for the presidency of the United States. She has gotten where she is solely on brains and hard work and I have never once heard her even attempt to raise the issue of race or gender as a contributing factor to or barrier against her success. For this I greatly admire her.

We should just get the point that we should be judged as a whole.
As a person as a part of humanity and the role you choose to play. Regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.

Quit being a racist and just be a good person. You lower your race when you say "Look, a black can get straight A's"

Like it is hard for a black to get good grades or something.
