The Republican party wasn't founded until 1854. Formed by a coalitions of Whigs, Northern Democrats and "Free-soilers". Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican President.

Primarily conservative in ideologies, I don't think Thomas Jefferson would have been one since he was very liberal in most concerns.

Jefferson was a democrat. The Republican party did not exist in 1789.
