You should use eye wetting solutions for contacts or special ointments made specifically for the eye.
I was prescribed a bacitracin ointment and told to wash my hands thoroughly after applying and use paper towel that can be disposed of rather than a cloth towel where repeated use can occur.

You can make a cup of tea, then take the tea bag and put it over your eye. That helps.
