I'm thinking it requires a bit of stealth. I wanna "transplant" the little bugger without hurting him and I caught a young one with a fishing net a few years back but this guy is a biggin'

hey i like the idea of befreinding him, but what will you do if it hugs you and you like it :)). they love green beans, corn and clover if that helps. we have one in our backyard as well. hey maybey you can train it to do tricks.
but if that fails try the trap(i actually reccomend this first) it is safer for you and him.I actually set a trap to catch ours earlier this year but a racoon got trapped first so when they seen the trap they wouldnt go near it. so be on standby to keep stray pets away from it till the groundhog is trapped.

Those big rodent teeth that he eats with can do a number on your hands and face if he is upset by your trying to grab him. Using your hands is a very bad idea.
Why don't you get one of those have-a-hart traps that live catch them? One for a woodchuck are probably abut $30. They are open on both ends so animals are not scared to walk into them. But when the animal grabs the bait on the trigger then both ends slam shut and latch so he can't get out. You then pick the trap up by its handle and drive the woodchuck to someplace at least three miles away from your house and tip it on its side to release the latches. He will run for cover and be gone without danger to you. No touching the animal and the trap is available for any other woodchuck that might visit your house.

If the live trap doesn't work, I recommend letting a dog live in your yard for awhile. I good hunting dog won't allow a woodchuck to remain on the property.

MY ADVICE IS, DON'T DO IT.
FIND SOMEONE WHO HAS A SMALL LIVE TRAP, BAIT HIM IN, CATCH HIM WITHOUT USING YOUR HANDS.
LIVE TRAPS DO NOT KILL OR MAIM, BUT IF YOU TRY TO CATCH HIM WITH YOUR HANDS, HE'LL DO THE MAIMING.
ONCE YOU'VE CAUGHT HIM, TAKE HIM TO SOME NICE WOODED AREA, OPEN THE TRAP, COAX HIM OUT, AND VIOLA; TRANSPLANTED WOODCHUCK.
PLUS, NO MATTER HOW TOUGH OR BIG YOU ARE, CHANCES ARE HE'S GONNA BE A WHOLE LOT QUICKER THAN YOU.
