I assume you want to change what character shows up when you press a key. To do that -- if you have XP -- go to the Control Panel and Regional and Language Options, go to the Languages tab and click the Details button. If you're lucky, you should be able to pick the UK keyboard from the list.
More likely, the computer is only configured for an "English (United States) " keyboard. If that's the case, click on the Add button and select "English (United Kingdom)" keyboard. Now used the drop-down to change the Default input language to "English(United Kingdom)". Click on OK to save the new setting.
Now, if you want to change the character on the keyboard itself, you're going to need a little bit of paint . . .

Your keyboard is almost definately set up for US configuration.
You need to go in Settings and then Regional and Language options.
Then work your way through the tabs changing each one to UK Config. Hope this helps.

I assume you are using a US configuration for your keyboard. My number 3 is #, not £.
You can type the £ anytime by holding down the ALT key and using the number keypad (right side of the keyboard), hit 0163

do you mean pound currency £, or pound /hash key #? a good work around for the time being would be to go into Word to >insert >symbol and get it from there, and just cut and paste it where you want it. its a pain in the butt but it works until you reconfigure your keyboard.

Just paint it on yourself, believe me, it works.
Haha, just kidding
The only way to change that would be to either get a new keyboard, or find the software that came with your keyboard (however your lucky if your keyboard even had software, and even luckier if you can configure a number key)
Well good luck, but your best bet is going to be to get a completely new keyboard.. they sell them pretty cheap now, just keep your eyes open.. Your going to need one.. sounds like yours is out of date.

no matter what symbol is there try pressing and hold the shift key then hit the 3 key. That should give you a # .
If not write back and tell us what you got.
