I'm trying to refurbish an old IBM Thinkpad A20m. I've installed Windows 2000 on it. However, I get many random crashes and BSODs. I'm replaced the RAM, re-installed many times, installed a new hard drive, etc. Currently I'm ordering a new CMOS battery, but i'm not sure it's that. The only conclusion I have left is that there may be a microfracture somewhere on the motherboard that is causing the system to fail intermittenly. However, I am unsure how to diagnose such an error as every BSOD gives me a different message (i.e. page_fault_in_non_page_fault , etc) and set of memory registers.

what about the CPU? have you replaced that? troubleshooting a microfracture in the motherboard is going to require board-level troubleshooting and technical knowledge of the board. you'll probably run into more problems trying to get a detailed schematic from IBM than having them send you a replacement board for testing; both of which are probably impossible to get unless you're an authorized repair shop. The only other options you might have are to buy someone's old A20m to use as parts or you might be able to contact IBM and have them send you one refurbished if they still have them.
