It's quite far but easy on the train. Make sure you buy a ticket because they do do random inspections. Yes, you can store your luggage at the train station but make sure you get there early because lockers are not to easy to come by.

It is about a 15 minute train ride. The bus seems quicker but I am not sure if that is just my imagination. I have never left my luggage at Central Station but I have left it at Schiphol a couple times. If you go right from where the trains are (facing into the airport) there is a luggage check and lockers down stairs. There are signs for it and you can find it on those little airport maps.

The train from Amsterdam CS to Schiphol takes about 15minutes, and several trains per hour.

There are lockers at the station where you can leave your luggage, they are rented per 24hours for between Eur4 to Eur 6 depending on the size.

I got this little expert from this website:

http://www.let.uu.nl/LOT/GraduateProgram/LotSchools/Winterschool%202006/GenInfows06.html

There is a train connection from Schiphol Airport to Central Station and vice versa. There are at least 6 trains per hour in the daytime, and there is an hourly service throughout the night. The journey takes 15 to 20 minutes (for timetables, see http://www.ns.nl).

You can get a locker at Centraal Station, but it can get quite expensive. We had to check out of our hostel, but did not want to leave Amsterdam yet, so we rented a locker. The bigger the locker the more it costs. I think they charge daily.

The CS station is a dump. I wouldn't leave anything there. Vagrants everywhere. It is not a very long train ride. I would leave your luggage at airport if you can find a place there. Check with the airline.
