The Faroe Islands have featured in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers since 1994, as yet with no serious prospect of qualifying. In the preliminary tournament for the 2002 FIFA World Cup their only wins came against Luxembourg as opponents like Russia, Slovenia and Switzerland proved too strong.
Classier opposition also proved their downfall in previous qualifying competitions. But the Faroe Islands take the credit for one major upset in a 1990 European Championships qualifier, when they beat a strong Austrian side 1-0 on neutral ground in Sweden.
In the qualifiers for 2004 UEFA European Championship finals, Germany encountered surprisingly tough opposition from the Faroe Islands. In the away leg, German dignity was only saved by two late goals. Even at home, the Germans struggled to impose themselves.
