Natural reflex (reaction), its similar to when you sneeze and close your eyes or when someone tries to hit you and your arms come up to protect or block the punch. And obviously to prevent a major eye injury.

It's clearly a natural spontaneous reaction....otherwise known as protecting oneself....
There is no way the human race has survived without taking every protection of itself that it can find........and inner reactions are clearly the most important. It is human instinct and thank God for it.......
After all....you couldn't get much more important a sense than sight now can you.....we even blink if someone slowly moves a hand towards our eyes of flicks their fingers near our face.............

It is a reflex action that is controlled by your subconscious. It is meant to protect your eyes from injury. Your subconscious doesn't know the difference between small particles and a fist, so it treats them the same in less you take the time to reprogram your reflexes.

Because your eyes are verry sensitive and can be hurt easily, you close your eyes to protect them from injury espesialy if someone tries to hit you in the face. it is a natural defence reaction. you will not be able to fight or run away if you cant see who to fight or where you are going.

Because of the adrenal gland. When you undergo any type of adrenaline, the adrenal gland sends a message to the brain telling it to either fight back or flight, hence the glands nickname, "fight or flight" gland. Closing your eyes is a result in the glands message to the brain.

It's a instinctive defence mechanism. You try to avoid the impact and to protect yourself - your eyelids are part of your body's protection.
