They will work, but I wouldn't use one with a band.

See, they are geared up for guitars. The sound a bass makes has lots and lots of low end (obviously). If you are playing with a band, chances are that you're playing very loud. This will probably blow either the amp or the speakers. Also, you won't get the full bass sound from a guitar amp.

You can practice by yourself through a guitar amp, but I wouldn't use one with a band.

i learned this recently at an electronics schematic site, ill post the addy at the end, youll have to hunt for it. it gives the ins and outs on amp functions,types and design. if im not mistaken(and i probably am), the diff(in the amp not the speaker or box) is the amount of post that is cut and redirected to the pre side.
i dont know if this link will be active or not, but there are many howtos as well as design repair,effects and video and anything else you can think of including souncards etc.
