Quicksand is sand full of water, and often has an upward water flow as well. When sand is saturated with water, the pressure between the sand grains and friction is decreased. The water stops the grains from bumping into each other and the result is sand too weak to bear the weight of a human resting on its surface

Quick means alive like quicksilver (mercury), the quick of the fingernail or the quick and the dead. Quicksand is sand, silt and clay, etc. suspended in water perhaps by a spring supplying an upward flow of water at the bottom. The surface may look like sand but it acts as though it was alive swallowing up whoever treads on it.

I have stepped into it.
It is a mixture of water, sand, and soil that will support very little weight, and when you step into it, you quite rapidly sink.
