Electric current is defined as the "flow" of positive charge.

In a wire, the positive charges are fixed, so electrons "flow" from the negative terminal to the positive terminal. The current is still defined as "flowing" from the positive terminal.

If the battery is a wet cell, there are positive and negative ions moving between the plates.

The posotive side "pushes" energy while the negative side "sucks" the left-over.
