There are only a few ways not to get a virus on your computer, and it doesn't matter what kind of computer you have or what OS you are running.
1. Never connect it to the Internet or another computer.
2. Never install any extra software other than what came with your computer.
3 Never put and disk, USB or any other media storage device into your computer.
Unfortunately, if you follow the rules above you will not get much use out of your computer, so the second best thing you can do is do your best to prevent your system from getting a virus.
There are several ways you go about limiting your risks of catching a computer virus. I got my first computer back in 1985 (an IBM) and now I have 8 of different brands with different versions of Windows, and I have yet to get a virus on my computer. The reason is I take a very pro-active approach to keeping the viruses at bay by making sure I keep my systems up to date with good Anti-Virus software. Plus, I am cautious about what I download to my computers.
I'm a PC guy, but if I were to buy a Mini Mac I would buy the 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo: Super Drive. The reason is I would want something that's going to last me longer, before I need to worry about upgrading to a new computer and that one has a larger hard drive and faster processor. Plus, it has a much better DVD drive. It sounds like it will do everything you want it to do.

The Mac mini and the 17" iMac are essentially equal as far as specs (speed, memory, storage), the main difference is the iMac includes the monitor, keyboard and mouse and the Mac mini doesn't.
If you have a monitor from an older computer (Mac or PC) that you've got hanging around, you can use it with the Mac mini if you want. But if you don't, you'll have to buy a monitor to go with the Mac mini, as well as a keyboard and mouse.
The iMac, on the other hand, has everything you need in the box and all you have to do is take it out, plug it in and go. So unless you have a really nice monitor you'd want to use with the Mac mini, I say go with the iMac.
And ignore all of the people who fly by and mention one PC manufacturer or the other as "TEH BEST!!11!" They're all running Windows and they're all virus-prone. (No known viruses for Mac OS X, you know?)
By the way, if you or anyone you know is a college student (or an employee at a college) you can get a discount through Apple's online store for education, which you can get to through the link below.

With the Mac Mini, you need your own monitor, keyboard, and mouse. None are provided with the Mac Mini. It is up to you to decide what mac you want. I own an iBook G4, and it does everyting I need it to do and more. The Mac Mini will be able to do what you want it to do. I would also look at a MacBook, so you can take your work with you on the go.

What you're asking for it to do is very basic, so it will be able to run what you want with ease. A more powerful Mac would be useful for rendering pictures and/or films which I doubt you'll be doing much of.
And the Mac mini is nice and small. I'd love one of them. Maybe I will sometime

Any computer connected to the internet is at risk for accepting viruses. Mac's are not immune.
On the mini or the 17 in... think about how often you will have to move it around, and the area you're going to put it in. Yes I do believe the mini will suit the needs you have posted.

Either one will do you fine, but get atleast a dual core there with a Gig of RAM.
And if you are looking for a computer that wont get a virus, buy a calculator. Even Macs get them.

you probably prefer a password to get admission to it. Do an internet site seek in keeping with ip to confirm what the server or laptop became. It became probably a working laptop or laptop on the community he became having access to which you at the instant are not to any extent further linked to.
