Because God has a special plan for that child. Your job? Love it and be thankful for it!

As a 'one-handed' male (a Polio related reason after birth), there is much that I'd like to say but which would likely go right by you or seem trite, and would neither answer your question or be what it is you really want.

Your child has been 'unlucky' - for whatever reason. But, assuming that there is nothing else 'wrong' with it, then it is luckier than some (or many).

I've had friends who have had no ears, or legs that are like 'twigs' that just flop about in the breeze. Some were born with no legs at all and.......

This may not help you, but help yourself and your child by looking at what is there, what works, and try see the fact that your child was born safely into the arms of its loving parents.

I wish you and your Family well.
My Regards.
Sash.

I was born with a hand that was not 100%. It was due possibly to mom taking anti-biotics while I was inutero.

Many causes of birth defects vary to disease or drugs.

Thalidomide was a culprit in the late 50s, Alcohol and drug abuse are among the highest causes today of infantile deformities.

people who are not born that way see it as a curse or a handicap. I personally don't believe I am either. I make do with what I've got. I don't know any better.

Because this baby is a special one, born to special people who God knows will keep safe, healthy and loved. I went to school with a girl that only had one hand, she was a lovely girl, very clever and a excellent cross country runner. Its whats inside that counts, children are wonderful and very special human beings with feelings and dreams, make sure you help yours reach theirs. Love is the key.

Best wishes
JJ

Did the doctors speculate as to the possible cause? It could be any number of things. Perhaps some drug the mother took during pregnancy (as the extremities were forming.) I'm no expert, but I remember the babies born to mothers who took the drug thalidomide had damage to or missing extremities.

There are so many possible reasons that you'll probably never know. The likelyhood is that it's nothing you did wrong and couldn't have been prevented.
People adapt to far worse disabilities than this. Once your shock has worn off you'll probably see it as far less of a problem.

I hope everything works out for you.

god blessed you with a wonderful child that you may love and cherish just as he did with me. I have child who is smart and in talent pool, and a child with autism. A child who is differnt is still a child with all the needs of any other child. We are humans not cookie cutouts. if we were all the same inside and out we would be no fun.
Be a reat parent and never let anyone hurt your baby.

Why is any child born disabled? As long as this child is in a loving caring family he/she will thrive and grow in to a healthy adult who has been loved all through their life.

There are many reasons for this. Substances (drugs, food, etc) taken during pregnancy can play a role, for example.
