Also I have another question i'm not sure about..
What patterns can be seen in the ways elements react first with oxygem and then with water to form either acids or bases?

I think the first is that they form acids, carbonic acid and sulfuric acid.

I think it's necessary for these elements to react and form compounds with oxygen before becoming acids, because they are the same charge as hydrogen ions.

H2CO3 -----> CO2 + H2O (in fact this is the true way of the reaction)

(CO results from an incomplete combustion of carbon material so is not completely soluble in water)

SO2 + H2O ------->H2SO3 (in equilibrium)

SO3 + H2O ------->H2SO4 (in equilibrium)

If oxide contains the atom in a higher state of oxidation the number of oxygens increases in one unit.
