Hi Dear Roberta ;

AC = AD + DC
{ because ' D ' is between ' A ' & ' C ' }

AD=5x-3
DC=7x-15
- Now follow the formula ;
AC = AD + DC
AC = 5x - 3 + 7x - 15
AC = [ 5x + 7x ] + [ -3 - 15 ]
AC =12x - 18

Good Luck sweetheart.

AC=5x-3 +(7x-15)= 12x-18

If D is not the midpoint of AC, then

AD + DC = AC
5x - 3 + 7x - 15 = AC
AC = 12x - 18

-----------------------------------

If D had been the midpoint, then

AD = DC
5x - 3 = 7x - 15
-2x = -12
x = 6

5(6) - 3 = 30 - 3 = 27

27 * 2 = 54

5x-3 = 7x-15
+15 -5x
12=2x
x=6

27=27

AC = 27
