If you don't know anything at all about it, I would disconnect the power first, then take the back off your tower. Slip out the memory chip...(It will be a long narrow piece), take it with you to the computer store and ask for another one just like it, then go home and put the first one back in the same slot, then put the new one in the slot next to it.
Screw the cover back on your tower, plug power back in...you should be good to go.

alright first open up the tower and check the motherboard to see how many slots there are for RAM, then after that just make sure that the ram fits without forcing it, if all the slots are full then remove the smallest one and put in the 256.

A 256 strip will probably cost you about 40 bucks. and if you go to cnet.com and go to the cnet tv section they have a vieo tutorial on how to install ram under the tips and tricks heading

you need to buy a 265MB ram card open your computer case (with the computer off but plugged in) and find a card similar to the one in your hand and plug it into an adjacent slot.

If you have a spare slot, put another 256Mb stick in. Check that they are matching types.
