Really depends on what you want to do - and what platform the server is running - If it's windows then Thin Clients appear to becoming fashionable again (Using Terminal Services and Remote Desktop) or using citrix software.

Peer to peer is limited to 10 connections to any one workstation and can be an admin nightmare.
Server Centric based systems give you 1 centrally managed network with the ability to expand pass the 10 workstation limit and makes the administrative overheads much simpler.
Microsoft Uses Active directory being the major player in todays market although LINUX is growing fast.
And by the way Microsoft provides SBS. Small Buisness Server. Which includes all major network sevices such as ISA, Exchange, SQL for less than £500.
