I don't understand why it is celebrated either. Columbus didn't discover America, Amerigo Vespucci did thus the countries name America not Columbus.

Most people don't celebrate it, they just work in a company or go to a school that recognizes it as a holiday. Columbus had nothing to do with America. It's just a lie that text book taught us and sadly some people still believe it to be true.
Being a college student I would have loved to have a day off but most universities don't acknowledge Columbus day any more. So I guess I better get off this computer and head to class.

At the time that Columbus Day was established as a holiday there was a large Italian population that lobbyed congress and just like mark foley and little boys they govertnment could not ignore or stay away from the votes that they got the next election year for the establishing the holiday.
As people have always known Columbus did not discover America he brought desease and hatred to the indians

Well he discovered an entire continent and proved that the world was round. Popular culture would like to make you think that he was so evil, and peole now take this discovery for granted. By that rationale, why do we have a space program? Why go to othr planets..there might be life there! Then whats the point! ...can you see where that thinking is flawed? Honoring Columbus also helps remind us of a culture that believed in discovery, learning, and growing. A culture and tradition that the west (especially America) has inherited.

I don't celebrate it, since I'm Canadian. I have heard some negative things about Columbus, even if he DID find the Americas (though the natives already knew where it was, lol). It's just another excuse to have a holiday I guess.

Columbus proved that the world was round and that there was land that stretched from the North Pole to the South Pole. Since it was not know to any one in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India or Asia and since the Natives to the Americas never sailed to them, he gets the credit for its discovery. You see history revisionist will say you can’t discover what was already there. I say then how come no one knew about it before his voyages. Natives did not sail west to Asia or India and come back to tell the other natives what they found. They did not sail east to find Europe, Africa or the Middle East. They did not have the technology to build ships to sail that distance. They still got around in canoes. Columbus discovered the new world. Amerigo Vespucci was his mapmaker hence the name Americas. Its a great reason to honor this explorer.

I honestly don't either. Columbus wasn't really that great of a guy if you read the early history books.

No one celebrates it except the post office - and they'll find any excuse they can to take a day off!
