Richard Feynmann. A genius in the true sense of the word and an amazing character. Everything from playing bongos to deciphering Mayan hieroglyphs as hobbies and much, much more.
Try a library for his book ; "Surely you're joking Mr Feynmann".

My hero: Michael Faraday

From humble beginnings he became one of the best ever practical physicists of all time. Also, he was really keen that everyone understood science - especially kids (including 9th graders!)
