The problem is that the rankings start before the season starts. Basically if they want to have the early season rankings then fine. But then lets say 10/31 the voters look at the season so far and then rank the teams from there. That way all 119 teams will have played and will all be in their conference schedules ( well into). This would greatly help the teams that are undefeated but started too far down the polls to pass the teams in front of then, like Auburn and LSU of a few years ago. or Even USC getting left out the year they beat Michigan in the Rosebowl instead of playing in the Championship. If a team starts at 1 and 2 and run the table, they will not get passed. So this year. WVU is a good tema with a lot of pre season hype so since thay have played well and stayed undefeated they are #5. Keep in mind that They did get passed by Michigan at least. The weak schedule will hurt them.

To a degree they can't help their weak schedule. With the Big East not really having ranked teams they can't say look at the strong teams. On the other hand I still say Pitt should be ranked. Also if you knew College Football you would realize that is another big game for WVU. It is known as the Backyard Brawl and is played in Pittsbugh this year. Basically what happened is WVU won the Big East last year and that is what started them so high though. Oh and how about USC, which is ranked above WVU and isn't playing great teams. The rankings aren't really based on how good the teams you play are. Yet everyone throws a fit about the BCS(and rightfully so because the system is broke) which at least includes strength of schedule as part of how it figures things out.

Oh nd this no playoffs please is always said by the teams that are at the top. All the rest admit the playoff is needed to figure out who the REAL Championship be, yet the top teams are AFRAID they will lose. Also fear by teams like USC and Notre Dame who know they are TRADITIONALLY overranked.

There are a lot of things considered by the AP before the rankings are decided each week. You have to look at the returning number of players from last year and what they did last year.

They may even go undefeated for the year, but won't go to the national championship in AZ, due to their weak schedule. For example if Florida has beaten Auburn, Tennessee and LSU, as an undefeated team, they would get a bid. Like Ohio State beating Texas. If West Virginia goes undefeated, they will not get a top bid, as they didn't ever beat Texas.

Remember, There's only 1 week that the rankings really matter, and there's only 1 NCAA Championship game.

You can't avoid the ranking system, there are how many teams in Division one football? something like 130,

lets say Ohio State goes undefeated (they will) and so does W. Virginia, I doubt they will play each other, especially if another team like Florida (unlikely) or USC (more likely) also goes undefeated. the only way I can see them playing each other if is they both go undefeated and are the only ones to do so. if not, that's the price they pay for being in a weak division. personally I am hoping for florida to play my mighty buckeyes in the big game.

everybody who keeps saying bring in the playoff style is unrealistic.respect the tradition that is College Football.

They bet Georgia in a BCS game last year. That's the only reason they are hanging around in the top 5 of college football. I think they will play Ohio State in the BCS 1 & 2 game, but they will get smashed by Ohio State. Ohio State looks crazy good, like the Bears in 86.

I have been saying the same thing all season long,I'm with you man I really am.I mean they played Eastern Washington...Who the f*** is Eastern Washington.I guess the only reason they are so high is because they have such an easy schedual...I guess people are almost certain that they will go undefeated because of their schedule.

the only thing i can think of, is that some top 5 teams are losing games and they get knocked down on ranks while others (like Michigan) is moving up on ranks.

also, look where Notre Dame is. They were ranked #2 as well as Texax, and look at where they are at now.

i hope i didn't confuse you more :(

Exactly why college football needs a playoff system. let it be decided on the field!

Edit
Notice the Ohio St. guy below me doesn't want a playoff. Wonder how he would have answered that question last year?
