You plan to move to Japan? Me too! I'm planning on moving to Japan after colIege. I never been there but I heard it was nice. I also heard that the people are nice. There are good places to go to. Are you learning Japanese? If you plan to move there you have to know Japanese. People who lived Japan that are American told me you must know the basics to be able to live in Japan. I know some people who live in Japan. I know both Japanese and American people who live in Japan. Feel free to e-mail me. i see that Japan_is_home and Adam answered your question. LOL

I lived in Japan for 5 years and loved it. It's daunting at times, the language (especially reading Japanese), the costs, the racism that a large white guy occasionally ran into. But the daily politeness, the kindness of the people, the beauty of the countryside all made my stay wonderful. It's a difficult country just to go and live. The Japanese government is very strict about giving long term visas but as a tourist or a visitor for a couple of months, it's great. You could always marry a Japanese person or teach and have a work permit - these would allow you to stay for a longer period.
My suggestion is to visit and see how you like it. Take some Japanese lessons because even though Japanese schools teach 6 years of English, nearly no one speaks it because they rarely encounter foreigners. I live in another Asian country now that gets lots of tourists so English is widely spoken. In Japan, most tourists tend to be Japanese visiting their own country.
But it's a gem of a country and I highly recommend checking it out.

I live in Japan now, and it has been 3.5 years. I moved from NorCal. In my opinion and experience, it is and continues to be a great experience. Something new at all point and turns. You get used to all the common things like, the weather, walking, trains and life in general. All of the little of life we adjusted to in a month. Our first year was a time of learning and adjustment. We also spent time finding things to do as a family. After one year, my family and I just started to really discover Japan. We started to travel all arounf Japan. By this time we knew the best and cool places to go, and when to go to avoid crowds and congestion. By our 3rd year, we were so used to Japan, that visiting the USA was strange. We were so used to Tokyo life.
Now, there are things that I missed about the USA that you simply dont have here in Japan, or if you have it is is just not the same. A few examples are: Snowboarding. I am an old school boarder, been riding for about 15 years now. I miss the wide open, trails and difficult terrain of the Tahoes. I missed the wide open spaces of the USA. If you want to enjoy something big, wide and spacious, you peobably will not find it here in Japan. For example, I used to cruise my sports car along the highways on weekend. Just cruise and drive out to nowhere, not traffic jams or highway tolls. I now enjoy my 45 minute train ride to and from work every day.
What makes Japan special compared to other places? Well that is in your heart and mind as everyone has different likes and dislikes. In Japan you can see where old meets new, you can see a nation's history, most of all you can experience a culture that could be different to what you have grown up with.

I like Japan for the same reasons I liked, Brasil, The Netherlands, the UK and Hong Kong, they were all very different than home.

The Japanese culture is amazing. I am an American who is teaching English here. I love it. The culture is fascinating, the people are very friendly and I have enjoyed my stay this far. I think you should come to Japan when you are older. It'll be a great experience for you.

Japan is great great place to visit, BUT i don't really recomend to live there.
Every things is high tec and pretty sight seeing, many places to hang out. that all about the good things. let me start the negative parts of Japan.....where should i start, OK first of all, everything is damnn too expensive, it cost you to go places of course but i mean a lot! cloths foods everything! way too much. People are pretty nice but i wish they speak little more English B-cause its really hard to comunicate with Japanse pple.
Oh yeah one thing i realized, they well be nice to you only if you are WHITE, BLACK, or Japanese (american). If you are something else, think twice of going there cause they well treat you like sh*t. Especially if your Indian or Arabic, don't go there. you well feel misserable.
One last and major thing, you well get VERY EXHAUSTED. its little hard to explain but you would understand once you go there.
so girl, i would definetly recomend you to go vist, but its not too late to make a dicision weather or not u wanna live there or not.

well i hadn't been there, but i love it myself. one day i will go there once i have money or there's people who're gonna go and i can join them.

the city is very beautiful in tokyo and kyoto. you can also visit many shopping centers since there is lots of things to see.

the food is simply superb! i have loved ramen too much that people have to lock me up to stop me.

the people at japan are friendly and polite. but not all of them however. but you may get rude stares but that's only because they are nervous about foreigners, nothing to do with you personally.

the nature is simply worth visiting. and the arts they make are beautiful.

it's just simply the beautiful country i have ever known.

KANE-O is right about the exhaustion; I think it comes from having to walk such long distances (from apt. to train station; probably have to stand on certain trains; from train station to subway line; from subway line to *another* subway line; KANE-O understands!).

I spent 10 solid years in Japan, and learned more than I can tell you here. I'll summarize by saying, it's like living on Mars; you will not be able to anticipate the differences until you experience them for yourself.

Good luck.
