i was trying to narrate what happened yesterday to a friend ,,,,should i say and this was what happened or this is what happened?

"This is what happened." What happened is already past tense. You can't put the past further in the past.

You should say "What had happened was" J/k It depends on how you're starting the sentence b/c you never start a sentence with and.

I think it might be easiest to say, " and this happened".
