I have tried but I think that I am doing something wrong!

Scripts go in the head section, delineated by tags. They're usually called by event tags - onLoad, onClick, onMouseover, etc. Some simple actions can be contained in the event tag.

Pasting javascript onto a webpage is the same as pasting any other codes- you need to make sure its formatted properly, and it should work fine. I personally like to save javascript files on blank pages and link to them, to save time on the download, but to each his own.
