This requirement is outlined in Article II of the US Constitution.

The framers put this provision in because they were afraid of some foreign born aristocrat coming to this country, becoming president and dissolving the democracy. This sounds totally outlandish in our day, but in the 1780s there were many lesser monarchs and members of the European aristocracy who were looking for a place to rule.

"It is well known that the Founding Fathers were mindful in the extreme of foreign influences, and the dangers therein to the Republic. While experience has shown that a native-born Chief Executive is not necessarily immune to foreign influence, the odds are certainly more favorable if the president is an American plain and simple, who has never been, and is not at the time of taking office, anything else."

it fairly is a valid question and that i will no longer be able to offer an answer. i can think of of quite a few the explanation why it incredibly is going to be preserved, besides as quite a few the explanation why it incredibly is going to no longer. The overriding element i can think of of, merely because of the fact somebody isn't born right here, yet has lived right here for a solid some years, does that cause them to much less of an American? If the respond is confident, then McCain could be much less American because of the fact he wasn't born right here. via birthright, being born to a u . s . a . militia man or woman in Panama, makes him born right here. Or how approximately my chum who I had lunch with as we talk, he's an American, born and raised on Arizona, yet he has 2 daughter that have been born in Kenya whilst he became coaching there. as we talk they are grown and are human beings and given all rights as though they have been born in usa. Are they much less American, or equivalent? What if a man or woman immigrates right here at 6 years previous with their mothers and dads and at the instant are a citizen an prolonged time later and has all the nationalistic delight that many human beings have. Does that cause them to much less or equivalent? As for me, the jury remains out on that one.........i merely can't make up my concepts. =============== existence is so basic, yet we insist on making it complicated Confucius 551 - 479 BC =============== Peace Jim .

Ah, an Arnold fan, right? Well, there are only a few jobs that require you to be native-born, and President is pretty important, don't you think? Shouldn't our president have a vested interest in THIS country?

That would be a conflict of interest. The president of the United States should be native simply because he or she would claim only American citizenship. This job is one of the most important in the world, and there should be no question of loyalty to American interests.

The fore fathers had great insite and knew that the country had to come first, so someone born here would be more likly to look after intrests here and not in eurpoe. That should have been taught in all US goverment schools but it is not what the teacher unions want. Its a shame must kids do not get what they need in school these days

Cause it's in the constitution- they also have to be 35 years or older. I think it's to make sure that no matter what, US interests are most important to the President. Theoretically.

Well, if you are referring to Arnie, I agree with you. But, it makes sure whoever is in the high position has our country in his mind first, not his home country. Of course, a native born has the reigns now, & he certainly doesn't have 95% of his countries people in his mind first....hmmmm.....

Because you wouldn't want an outsider telling you how to live your life. Really, if someone lived in another country for many years, and then was elected president of the US, I wouldn't want that person trying to turn us into his old country,

Because it's the United States. I wouldn't want someone who was from France to be the US President, it just wouldn't make sense.
