how to display the history bar across the top of the page. i click everything and nothing works?

Go to the top on your tool bar, right click try a couple different spots if it doesn't work. It should say customize, click that. You should see history in the choices, drag it up there. I am running Mozilla browser but Explorer has the same options. You might be able to lock the toolbar if you want. You can also go through the control panel if nothing else.
