"War and Peace" is about the Napoleonic wars and was written half a century before World War I even began.

If you're interested in WWI, you absolutely must read "The Guns of August" by Barbara Tuchman. It deals with the political climate in which the war was triggered, the military plans and theories of the European participants, and covers the first month of the war (August 1914) very, very well.

The book is a total classic. I simply don't you could say that you are interested in the First World War if you avoid reading this book.

(Incidentally, President Kennedy had encouraged members of his cabinet to read "The Guns of August" and it influenced their conduct during the Cuban Missile Crisis as the book points out many, many mistakes made by both statesmen and generals in the opening days of the war)
