I'm thinking of getting a sugar glider, and I'm wondring about housing. Would a 55 gallon aquarium furnished with lots of toys, climbing limbs, etc be a suitable home for a glider or do they have to have a cage?

It's honestly extremely cruel to keep them in a tank. They are made to climb and glide. That's what they do in the wild...I breed them, and I'm begging you to please not do it!! You can get a good cage at www.sugar-gliders.com/store and shipping is only $5 I think that the cheapest cage is $145. They really need to have walls to climb. PLEASE email me for any other info or if you have other questions! I am more than willing to help you!

actually a cage works better, as they love to climb it and jump from one side of the cage to the other, also have a small box (preferably wooden) with a hole in it for them to sleep in, or go to pet store and buy a swinging sleeper, its soft fake fur that attatches to all four sides of the cage. sugar gliders like to sleep up high in the cage...have fun, they are cute, but you do need to spend some time with them....

Actually, a cage will work better. They must be kept warm so make sure where ever you put him he can be warm. They like to sleep in pouches. Hang it from the top of the cage and he can come and go whenever. In order to bond with one, you are suppose to carry the pouch on you.. like inside you coat or sweater. They get use to you by your smell and its perfect because your body is warm.
