Proud to be a Melungeon from NC. No one really knows. May be - may not be. Portuguese, American Indian, black mixtures along with an assortment of Arabs and whiteys create this interesting melange.

Google or Ask? is a wonderful source for information on the Melungeon story as it is currently debated - and web sites for and by us who don't give a darn. We are more interested in our shoots but find our roots interesting.

Generally, Melungeons who may have some "Turkish" genes have a bump of bone that is quite prominent in the center back of the skull...but then, so do many people of Mediterranean and Jewish heritage.

if you mean melungeons out of tennessee yes

the genotypes are matching up with mediterranian folks (many have mediteranean blood disease)...thy just somehow got lost and ended up in appalachia back in the day
further proof of turkish origin-the mountain word for wrist watch and the turkish word for wrist watch are both "sotts"

also melungeon could be speeled as "melun jinn" or "cursed soul" in turkish which would be a good name for a group of people who got lost in a foreign land and ended up in the mountains

Elvis used to claim he was one actually

My dad and I are getting gene mapped as well due to some relatives who claimed to be indian about a century ago...they claimed it but theyre names werent on any official rolls
