As a teen I loved the sunfire historical romance series which is unfortuantely out of print, however, your local library may have a few copies of them. The ones I read were Laura, Emily, Amanda, and Danielle. You can still get some of them on amazon or ebay.

If you like historical fiction you should really try reading Carolyn Meyer. She is a great writer, and I've only recently discovered her works. I've only read three books, but they've all been wonderful!
Aftershock by William Lavender is a great historical fiction/romance set in San Francisco ca. 1903-1907.
Other YA reading pleasures...
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Hit the Road by Caroline B. Cooney
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Peeps by Scott Westerfeld

Go to your loca bookstore and peruse the sci-fi/fantasy section, then go to the mystery section(both for all readers, not just teens), then go to a used book store with a list of some of the books that you want to read and buy them. After you read these and other stories, then come back to this site and either discuss what you have read or go to Baen's Books, sign on there. Go to the chat room, the Bar or one of several other subsites and discuss what you've read not only with other readers, but the authors themselves. The authors actually enjoy the feedback they get from this site. You can also choose to look up favorite authors for what is new and forthcoming, read commentaries and also read and download free ebooks. Good luck and happy reading!

Hmm, Have you heard of 'Fool on the Hill' by Matt Ruff? I love this book. I so wish there was a sequel.
Also, I have read the book 'Geek Love' by Katherine Dunn a couple of times. It is not exactly a kids book, but it has some fantastic writing.
If you like fantasy series, then the Dragonlance books might interest you. They are not quite as good as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but they are still entertaining.

A good author for historical fiction for adults/teens is Emile Zola. He is a 19th century French author who wrote books such as "Germinal," "A Ladies' Paradise," "Therese Ranquin." Zola's books are indepth looks at social inequalities in Europe during and after industrialization. His books use romance, murder, and passion to make history interesting and relatable to today's readers.
