You would think that the U S Census Bureau would have that data. Not a chance. They have 44 different way of reporting the Hispanic population but no information on how many people own stock.
I would have to make a guess. Say 30% the population is under 18. Only a small portion of those would own stocks, maybe 2%. Much of the population does not save any money at all much less invest it, about 70%. But companies do now have 401k plans and most people that work for a company that offers one would choose to be in it, say 70%. Others may invest in IRA accounts. Deductively speaking, I would guess 30%.
The U S Census Bureau did sample the number of households receiving dividends, interest, and rents, which is a clue. 35.9% pf households. Average household has 3.14 persons. So about 2/3 of that number receive dividends, interest and rent or 21% assuming joint ownership. Not all stocks and bonds are jointly owned. And it is dobtful that 401k accounts were included in that tally.
The answer may be as high as 35%

More than 1/3 of Americans have money in the stock market. Most of them are involved due to their investments in 401K plans and mutual funds.

I believe the numbers are much higher, at least over 50% as most people have some sort of profit sharing plan through their employer. They might not even realize they are in the market.

About 35% -- but most of those hold stock through a mutual fund.
