Standby reduces the power consumption of your computer by cutting power to hardware components that you are not using. Standby can cut power to peripheral devices, your monitor, even your hard drive, but maintains power to your computer's memory so you don't lose your work.
You can put your computer in standby automatically or manually. Automatic standby is handled by your computer through the power scheme settings. If your computer is idle for a specified period of time, it goes into power-saving standby mode. Manual standby requires you to specify an action that puts your computer in standby mode—closing the lid of your computer, pressing the power button, or pressing the sleep button. You can also select standby when you shut down Windows from the Start button. For the best management of your battery power, you should consider initiating both automatic and manual standby
Hibernate saves an image of your desktop with all open files and documents, and then it powers down your computer. When you turn on power, your files and documents are open on your desktop exactly as you left them
Poweroff is a small program that allows you to control the power state of your pc.
It can power off, shutdown or reboot your pc, log you off, lock your workstation, go to standby or hibernation mode and even wake up another pc.
All actions can be done locally or on a remote pc (if they are running poweroff).
The action can be performed immediately or scheduled, by using a built-in scheduler.
All actions and options can be controlled by command line options. This way, you can easily integrate poweroff in your batch files.

hibernate is when the operating system has control over peripheral devices. hibernate saves an image of your desktop with all open files and documents and then powers down your computer. when you turn on your computer all open documents and files are exactly the way you left them.
standby is when the user gives a command to the computer which cuts power to all peripheral devices. Standby cuts the power to the monitor, hard drives, and any other hardware that you are not using. It reduces the amount of power your computer consumes. but it maintains the computer's memory so you dont loose any work.
power off is when you shut the computer down completely. when you shut down the computer it usually saves all settings and applications and closes them. a small amount of power is going to the power supply when the computer is off.

Standby is still on and using up energy and will be ready right when you need it. Off uses no energy and you have to wait for it to turn on before you use it. Hibernate i think is the same as stand by

Power off - it reboots on start up - no power to the system
Hibernate - it saves the system state to the hard drive so it comes back up to the same point- no power to the system
Standby - Low power keeps memory in tact, but that is all. Shuts down everthing it can.

hibernate takes a dump of your memory and write it to disk......it is basically a snap shot of your system.system is turned off--best in power saving.
standby.....as the word says ...your system is running low power ...press any to intant access if in standby mode.
shutdown as the word says..............put off immediately.....no power unless you press the start button.
alternatively read their instruction manuals supplied with their computers/ read instructions in help and support
