Children invariably live up to the expectations set for them. Teachers can help to reinforce certain ideas, but primary influence comes from the profiling done by parents. In instances in which parental influence is minimal and groups of children are more or less raising themselves and depending on peers for validation, a 'gang mentality' will often result in a need to impress the group and meet ITS expectations.

My brother and I were often 'profiled' negatively by racist teachers and law enforcers in Texas. Because our well-educated parents had from birth programmed us with their own expectations that we would be educated, well-behaved, articulate people at the top of our classes and careers, we never bought into a bit of the negative profiling, but believed and lived up to what we understood our divine purpose to be.

I have tirelessly attempted to be an instrument of positive change in the lives of my own students and have often enough been successful. It is an uphill battle, however, when parents have not themselves made a concerted effort to reinforce values of morality and success in the young people to whom they are (supposedly) committed. Educated parents-- in general-- tend to emphasize education more for their children, and are able to better advise and assist them (with homework, SATs, college choices and applications, etc). When the input of either a father or mother is not involved, effects on a child's self-worth, discipline, and modeled values are also adversely affected.

I believe that genes have VERY little to do with the way a child turns out. Any child raised from birth with positive stimulation, Godly influences, and a good diet (important on some levels for brain development and ability) will be almost guaranteed to do well in his society.

Juveniles become deliquents because of their genes and also the social environment. They both have an impact. Just look at 3rd world nations where the social environment is very harsh. The juveniles go around killing each other for food and other necessities.

It happens all the time. There are people in their environment that are bad influences on them and make them become delinquents. Bad schools and bad home environments contribute too.

Every child is affected by his environment. A teenagers circle of friends have more influence than both parents in their decisions to take drugs, have sex, or engage in criminal activity
