find the common denominator. In this case 8.

so 5-6x over 4 becomes 10-12x over 8

and 3/2 becomes 12/8

Then take away the eights

so 3x-1 + 10-12X = 12

-9x + 9 = 12

-9x = 3

x = -1/3
