Wikipedia defines "Sport" : A sport is an activity requiring physical ability, physical fitness or physical skill which usually, but not always, involves competition between two or more people.

Driving a NASCAR Nextel Cup car requires physical ability - just ask Derrick Cope.

Driving a NASCAR Nextel Cup car requires physical fitness - just ask Mark Martin.

Driving a NASCAR Nextel Cup car requires physical skill - just ask Brian Vickers.

Finally, by virtue of the fact each driver competes with at least 43 other drivers for a spot on the track it involves competition between two or more people.

There you have it...NASCAR is a sport.

Oh and Scout 485...NASCAR is an acronym for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing

And Vick...I suppose football has nothing to do with the coach, assitant coaching staff, defensive coordinators, offensive coodinators, trainers? Oh and let's not forget, the owners. What a profound thought you had there.

Well, this goes back to the debate of "Is ice skating a sport". I say Nascar is because the result is left up to the ability of the driver/crew. The officials are there only to make sure rules are followed. In ice skating, the outcome is determined by a judge. The judges decision can be sway by such thing that do not equate to the persons real ability. Again, to break it down, yes nascar is a sport because its a group of men competing where the outcome is determine simply by their abilities. Also, that is why they call it "motorsports".

Yes - while most sports require only 1 ball to play, nascar has 86 on the track at the start of every race!

It depends on your definition of sport.

If it means someone able to maintain a high degree of attention while being accosted by heat, vibration, high speed, stress, high competitiveness and a constant potential for loss of life, then yes.

Although I'm not a nascar fan, during the longer races, the drivers loose 10 lbs of weight from water loss. If that doesn't indicate how stressful it is, I don't what will.

NASCAR is considered a spectator sport and the fan participation and attendance is greater than football, baseball and basketball combined.I suppose that actually translates into it being a sport for the car owners.....with all of the money being made....it surely is alot of fun for some "Good ol' Boys".

i would call it a competition more than a sport because nascar is not totally focused on an athlete (in this case a driver). it has a lot to do with ur car, ur pit crew, ur crew chief. etc... but for other sports the performance is solely based on athelete him/her self.

Cheers!!

Not only that, its name makes no sense. It is auto racing; but NASCAR originally stood for National Association of Stock Car Racers I think. But doesn't say anything on their website.

it's the 2nd most popular sport in america according to the TV ratings. if it's not a sport, you'd better call every newspaper in america and let them know, because every single one of them covers it in their sports sections. i can't believe so many of you morons have allowed yourselves to be brainwashed by the talking heads on ESPN, who tell you subliminally that only baseball, football, basketball, and hockey are sports. free your minds idiots! ABC used to have a show called 'wide world of sports', and oh how true that title rings. the world of sports is indeed very wide and deep, it's not limited to the stick and ball sports that ESPN focuses on, ignoring all others.

by the way what a spectacular race in talladega yesterday. all of you brainwashed NASCAR haters really don't know what you're missing. it was a gem.

NO!
nascar is an excuse to win money by watching cars drive, and drinking with your friends. When you could do the exact same thing looking out your window. They invented it so that they could get money for somthing you can do in your own house.
