We have Direct TV in our apartment but with no DVR or Tivo service. The bill is in my roommates name. I want to get Tivo but on my own, she's not inereseted in adding it to the account, can I just buy a tivo from tivo directlly and use it thru Direct TV and just pay tivo for the service? How does that work. Or do I totally have go thru DirectTV?

Can you buy a TiVo from TiVo - yes. You can buy a TiVo from anyone - eBay, Circuit City, TiVo.com - be sure to buy a "DirecTiVo" - specifically a "Series 2 DirecTiVo"

You will need to notify DirecTV in order for the service to work. $6/mo. This will have to be added to the DirecTV bill your roommate pays.

As previously stated, a DirecTiVo has 2 tuners. If you have an "old" dish or only 1 coax cable available, you will only be able to record or watch 1 show. If you have 2 RG-6 cables available, you can record 2 shows and watch a 3rd, taped, show simultaneously. I can't imaging life without my TiVo!

Yeah you have to get the service from Directv but, if you could talk the roommate into it and maybe offer to pay the difference you would be better off buying a DVR from Directv. Although Directv continues to support Tivo, they now have their own product. The Tivo you are referring to is a "stand alone" device whereas, DVR from DTV is both features built into one component and if you have a problem with your stand alone Tivo, Directv techs can not help you.
So I know when you buy (or lease) from DTV you make a 2 yr commitment to programming of at least $29.99/month but you get 24 hour 7 day tech service by calling in when you need help. The DVR & Tivo services cost the same $5.99. And if you have been with DTV any length of time and have a good acct history you can do and upgrade don't forget to ask them to give it to you. Trust me, they give away lots of them.

Yes you can buy it yourself, and contrary to what everyone else says, you can just pay TiVO directly yourself, of course it costs $12.95 a month that way instead of the $5.99 DirecTV charges. But there is nothing preventing you from just hooking up a TiVO with TiVO service to a DirecTV box.

You have to tell DirecTV so that they download the programming to the TIVO. It's $5.00 a month and (I think) no one-time charge. If you want to record 1 channel while watching live TV or record 2 channels, then you need a dual satellite dish (Dual LNB). You need to check that - DirecTV would have that on record.
I absolutely love my TIVO - haven't seen an add in two years. YES!
