The UN presently has internatinal "peacekeepers", not it's own army.
A powerful UN can deal with nations like North Korea, and back it with REAL military power.
A strong UN, with a strong leader. A United Nations Army with about 5 million men....would save American lives. Would deal with international threats, and rogue nations. THEN WE WILL HAVE PEACE.

I love the idea, but with a few things to add...
A NON- Anti-AMERICAN UN.
A Non-corrupt UN.
I really think the UN should be just as you discribed, but when you have a bunch of podunk, impoverished, countries and give them power....corruption is almost sure to follow. . . and that doesn't even solve the problem of FRANCE.

I guess it depends on how you define peace. No, I would not trust the UN to have real military power because they are not voted in and therefore not subject to any person or country. How would they be policed? What would happen if they started treating the citizens badly? Who would you go to then? That scenario would be my worst nightmare and should be yours.

We (the US taxpayer) already supports the UN. I say, let some of the other countries pay for it.
