What exactly does the Japanese writing at the opening of the movie mean? Is it a very clear message or a cryptic one that only adds even more "depth" and riddles to the movie?

It says, "If you can read this you are Japanese". LOL
OK- just kidding. Have you tried a translation website?

Good question Sherlock, I'd been wondering myself being the matrix multicultural fenomena if those symbols really have any meaning or are there for artistic purposes. In the Matrix nothing is what it seems. I think the Idea was to promote the concept of Higher language translation to machine language binary but in that case they should have use O and 1 like in the first movie. Hopefully the Wachowski brothers are snooping around Yahoo answers to give us a clue.

It's just katakana, Roman numerals, and regular letters written backwards and meshed together. Nothing cryptic about it.
I once read that the sequences apparently contain the worker's names, but that's not particularly interesting or even possibly true.
