They had just fought, and lost, a civil war. They temporarily took over the country, under Cromwell, but after he died, his son was a weak leader and the monarchy was restored. Unwilling to live under them, they left to go where they could live as they pleased (while killing Indians) and practice their religion as they pelased (while denying the same right to others).

The puritans were right wing protestants not associated with the Church of Englican (Anglican). They felt pressure and left to come over here. The reason that they stopped at Plymouth Rock was only because they were out of beer - truth. Your teacher will tell you for "religious freedom," but that can't be quite right. They wanted nothing of religious freedom, they wanted to worship as the pleased, but they wanted everyone else to worship like them. Look up Ann Hutchinson and Roger Williams and find out about their problems.

The answer that spoke of the English Civil War is incorrect. The puritans left 30 or so before the English Civil War.

The Puritans left England in 1629/1630 due to the "High Church- Arminianism" policies of Charles 1 and his Archbishop William Laud. They leave on the Arabella under the leadership of John Winthrop. In the ENGLISH CIVIL WAR of the 1640's, both King and Bishop will be executed.
Do not confuse the Puritans with the Pilgrims, who came to America in 1619 on the Mayflower, and gave us the first Thanksgiivng. Both groups are Calvinists, but the Pilgrims had left the Church of England whereas the Puritans remained within the Church, but wanted to "purify" the Church of "Catholic traditions- what they called "Popery."
