As leader of the Presbytrians in Scotland following the fall of the Catholic Mary Stuart(later executed in 1587 b order of Elizabeth 1) , he taught salvation through "justifiction by faith alone and "sola scriptura". As a Calvinist, he believed in predstination- salvation was a gift that could not be earned.
