In the traditional sense, a marathon is 26.2 miles since this is the distance of the original marathon in Greece. Anything over 26.3 is an ultra marathon. Typical distances for these are 30 miles, 40K, 50 miles and 100 miles although there are a few races that are even longer. There are also half marathons which of course, are 13.1 miles.

26.2 miles is a marathon.
Just to note on a previous comment, this is not the original distance. About a quarter of a mile was added for the London Olympics (1912 i think). This was so the Queen could see the finish from the royal box.
