Hey! I'm impressed with you! I'm a former English teacher, and I'm a writer now. You've done exactly what you needed to do to prepare to write a very good essay! . You have your intro paragraph where you explain what you're going to tell, .that's your intro paragraph 2nd paragraph (or part), take a stand and say he is not a hero, and use your examples you cited already. 3rd paragraph (or part) take a stand and say "ON THE OTHER HAND," Wiston had many heroic qualities and took heroic actions. Give your examples. THEN, the 4th paragraph (or part) You weigh the positives and negatives you stated, and make your own decision. That "extra-odd numbered" example would be a good one to use in your final paragraph of conclusion. YOU decide if he's a hero or not. It's your paper. You will be backing up your opinion with a quote--so it's not argue material, ya know. But do it this way, and whoever grades the paper won't argue with you. You make a statement and back it up with a quote or book reference. I bet this is exactly what your instructor wanted. Drop me an email listed on my account if I can be of more help. GREAT THINKER AWARD!

Winston's mortal fear is of Rats. Towards the end of the book, he is brought by O'Brien to room 101. This is where he must live his worst fear. They threaten to place a cage of ravenous rats over his head but just when it is about to go on his head, he shouts "not me. Do it to Julia." This shows that he no longer cares about anyone else except Big Brother.

He was starved, isolated, beaten then taken to Room 101 where people were faced with their greatest fear. In Winston's case a cage containing a rat was placed over his face. He was broken psychologically and begged O'Brien, the Inner Party member who befriended and betrayed Winston, to do it to his lover, Julia.

His interrogator (part of the big brother dictatorship) fixes him up in room 101 to a contraption that would allow starving rats to come through it and eat his head and brains alive.
Rats are his worst nightmare, and therefore he breaks and divulges details of his sexual partner and their meeting places etc.

by broken, i assume they mean how did the system finally break him down so that he lost his resistance to the system--you'll have to read the book to find out! i don't think it's as simple as the "rats" threat--that's a surface explanation and not the whole explanation.
