In the proper climate, birches are fine trees. They do not become heritage trees, that is they don't live for decades. Internally they are not designed for adverse conditions which shorten their lives.
Understanding the tree will not "live forever" and maybe only a few decades, it still can be an asset to the landscape.
Where conditions are naturally unfavorable for birches, such as drier, windier climates, I wouldn't bother either.

Aww...birch are not such a big problem! And they are lovely to behold.
If your climate is right for them, ask a local nursery. If they don't stock them, they may be willing to order one for you. I like to do business locally. It keeps the money in town and supports independent businesses as opposed to chains. Local experts can give you advice and support that mail order companies and chains cannot.

i would not plant a burch - they have short lifespans and generally seem to have a lot of problems.
