Hi,

I have a USB modem Alcatel Speedtouch and I want to add a WiFi router. The problem my WiFi router does not have an Ethernet port. I heard that I can use my computer ethernet port to make the installation work and share my internet access with my other computers. Can you please assist. Thank you!

From what I gather, there are three main possibilities:
- This one is fairly complex! Get a wireless adapter for your PC and configure the router to direct all packets from other computer to that connection. Of course Internet connection sharing has to be enabled.
- Get a modem router.
- Get an ethernet modem and replace your router by one with ethernet connections.

As you can see, your current equipment does not allow you to do any functional setup.

Ah, modems that don't have an ethernet port (USB only) are useless for connecting to a router- your best solution is to replace the modem with one that also has an Ethernet port.

You COULD enable Internet connection sharing via your network setup (Windows XP) but it's not particularly reliable- after awhile other machines may discover their net connection just isn't responding, and it does slow your computer down.

Having a modem that just plugs into a router and having all Internet traffic handled entirely by hardware without involving your PC, saves you many headaches.

If it says Wifi on your modem it would appear that you modem acts as both the router and the modem, which is starting to become common as chips size gets smaller.
