It may be adware/spyware.
Install Windows Defender. It is a Anti Spyware/ Adware program. Run a scan. If any Adware is found it will give you the steps on how to get rid of it.

With friends like that, who needs enemies? That same thing happened to me and I also wasted many hours trying to get back to normal. I finally had to reinstall Windows which deleted everything and started over. The downside of that was I had to reinstall everything I had downloaded from day 1. However, I learned from that experience just to stay on safe sites and not to go to weird sites nor click on unknown links.
Luckily, I have cable because everything downloaded and installed very quickly. Prior to that, downloading took forever with dial up. Sorry for your problems.

Have you tried housecall? It is a free scan that (usually) gets rid of all viruses spware etc. If not , ah well, swallow your pride and reinstall windows. Good luck!
