Andy Serkis was the actor who "played" Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. What made him historic is that the actual character, as seen in the movies, was CGI and was based on Serkis's movements, etc.
Additionally, Serkis was similarily used for Kong in Peter Jackson's version of King Kong. And Serkis has a small part playing one of the sailers on the ship in that movie.
As far as another, not-well-known characters: One example is David Prowse. In the Star Wars trilogy, he was the physical character of Darth Vader, though James Earl Jones did the voice. And I would say Darth Vader is definitely part of film history!

Andy was born and brought up in Ruislip, West London.
In 1999, Andy was offered the prize role of Gollum in Peter Jackson’s epic film trilogy version of J.R.R. Tolkien's saga The Lord of the Rings.
Andy has received accolades from around the world for his performance in the title role in Peter Jackson's King Kong, released in December 2005.

Ha! I actually knew he was Gollum/Smeagol too. There was a special on him in Premiere magazine a few years back about the complexity of transferring his character to film.
