When I was 14 and 15 back in the 1970's, we used to hitchike a lot. I was sexually propositioned by the men who gave me rides, probably on a weekly basis. My reaction was always to say "no." I didn't realize until now that I am actually the victim of an unspeakably horrific crime. I thought I had led a normal life. Now that I've realized the trauma I've been through, I'm going to start drinking and taking hard drugs and eventually commit suicide.

Any of you ever hear of a "witch hunt?"

Was your hitch hiking driver in a position of political and professional power over you?
Then you might feel a little different.
It's about power, not so much about sex.

You're comparing apples and oranges.
The situation you described is a bit different from what kids are dealing with today. First Tree Hugger got it right. With these stories that make it to the media, these are people of power. It is not just about sex, but being able to have more power over someone weaker. Secondly in most of these situations where the "courting" occurs online, the conversation doesn't start out with, "Wanna have sex?"
Sexual predators take their time to befriend these kids first, win their trust, then after a period of time the conversations will turn to sex. And a lot of the time, these men are misrepresenting themselves as teenagers themselves, with the kids not finding out the truth until it is too late.

I agree that the sexual predator scare is the hysteria du jour right now. But now-a-days everyone's goal is to be a victim of something. It validates their lives.

No child should have to be treated that way. Kids are so impressionable, they can be easily seduced or scared into doing something. It was wrong then, and it is wrong now.
